What is diabetes? (Sugar)

Blood is a carrier for many macromolecules in our body. It contains glucose (sugar).Blood should maintain glucose level in your body. Insulin is a protein which is maintains the level of the glucose in blood. If the insulin is not working properly, there will be rise in glucose level in blood and causes ‘Diabetes’ and general people call it as ‘Sugar’.
A normal blood sugar is between 70 mm/dl to 110 mm/dl. At a level of 124, this is still considered a good blood sugar. If the blood sugar is showing more than 200 

There are three types of diabetes:

1) Type 1 Diabetes:

The body does not produce insulin. Usually type 1 diabetes develops before their 40 years, often in early adulthood or teenage years.
Type 1 diabetes people will need to take insulin injections for rest of the life and maintain a special diet.

2) Type 2 Diabetes:

The body does not produce enough insulin or the cells in the body do not react to insulin. Worldwide approximately 90% of the diabetes patients suffer with this type of diabetes.

3) Gestational Diabetes:

This type affects females during pregnancy. Some women have very high levels of glucose in their blood, and their bodies are unable to produce enough insulin to transport all of the glucose into their cells.
The majority of gestational diabetes patients can control their diabetes with exercise and diet.

What are the long term problems due to diabetes?

If you neglect the diabetes problem, you have to face so many problems like heart problems, vision problems and kidney problems in long term.

Symptoms of diabetes:
  • Greater need to urinate.
  • Frequent hunger or thirst.
  • Weight loss
  • Blurred vision
  • Tingling/numbness in hands or feet
  • vaginal infections in women
  • Feeling tired
  • Very dry skin
  • Slow-healing sores
  • Infections

How to control diabetes?

If you suffer from sugar, you have to follow exercise properly, maintain good nutritional diet in your normal life, and follow your doctor’s recommendations.

The common reasons of high blood sugar are improper diet, lack of exercise, stress and health supplements.

Diet for Diabetes
  • Must have 8-10 glasses of water every day.
  • The diet most often recommended is high in dietary fiber, especially soluble fiber, but low fat.
  • Vegetarian food is better for diabetic patients.
  • Cereals that are higher in fiber Whole cereals like whole wheat flour , Refined cereals like rice, bread etc
  • Pulses Whole dals and Oat meal.
  • Milk and milk products
  • Never skip any meals. Always must have 4-5 small meals and must avoid heavy meals.
  • Watch your weight regularly and must be kept under control.
Avoided foods for control diabetes 
  •      Avoid sugar, glucose, candies, honey and sweets. 
  •     Avoid alcohol and smoking.
  •     Avoid Bananas, potatoes, sweet potatoes, deep fried foods, oil foods, fast foods, bakery items, grapes, mangoes and alcoholic beverages.
  •         Along with proper diet, medication and proper exercise is important to controlling diabetes. If diabetes and blood pressure is not kept under control, you can face so many problems. Every one remembered this "prevention is better than cure”.
